Wanted: Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers

It's official. My Cat CD is a hit! So I'm starting to think ahead. It'll still be a while before I have the time and money to record a follow-up CD, but I figured at the very least I can start collecting songs for another album.
So...
Now's your chance to be on the next CD. Pick your favorite Irish drinking song and rewrite the lyrics about your favorite cat. Any lyrics accepted will twenty copies of the album to share with your friends.
You can post the lyrics here.
|
The track you donated to Laughter is a Powerful Weapon is also one of the more popular tracks from the CD and is often featured on Dementia Radio during various DJ's shows. It'll be staying in my car's CD player for /quite/ some time. :)
I think you should start with the ones that got cut from the first CD. Just an idea!

I had a go at Molly Malone, but only realized later that you already had a Molly Malone parody.
I'll come up with something else later, but here's what I had before I realized:
In a dank, dark back alley where no one should dally that's where I first saw Mrs. Molly the Cat At the sound of my foot falls, She hocked up a hairball.
Crying, "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow hock, ack ack." Meow, hock ack ack! Meow, hock, ack ack! Crying, "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow, hock ack ack."
She had been left there to starve, Her owners had hard hearts. and the noises she made caused their last wits to crack. For they all really hated what she regurgitated
with a "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow hock ack ack." Meow, hock ack ack! Meow, hock, ack ack! Crying, "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow hock ack ack."
But despite her behaviour I decided to save her. And I took her that night to my small, humble shack. I just turn up the T V when she starts her heaving
with a "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow hock ack ack." Meow, hock ack ack! Meow, hock, ack ack! Crying, "Hss Fttt, Rowr, fttt, hsss, rowr, meow hock ack ack."

Question, however, even though Wild Mountain Thyme is not an *Irish* song, would it be acceptible?
I'm also working on Whiskey in the Jar....

Wild Mountain Thyme is fine. It actually falls into a questionable origins category. While based on a Scottish song, it may well be an Irish interpretation of one. So. that's fine.
I actually may have one for Whiskey in the Jar, but I'd still love to hear it. I've been working on "Whiskers in the Jar" for quite a while now. The song too. :p Just need to go back and edit it really.

This is for Cuddles, my companion of 13 years, who went to the summerlands this past August. TTTO: Wild Mountain Thyme Oh, the Summerlands are calling And the birds are singing The sun shines all the time All around the blooming catnip
(chorus) Will you meow, kitty, will you meow? And we'll all meow together Chasing birdies all the time And put catnip on their feathers Will you meow, kitty, meow?
I have loved my cat forever All his playfullness and pouncing But now he's old and grey And he sleeps instead of bouncing
Now the days are long in counting And it's time to bid you farewell To go now to your rest In the endless summer blooming
Oh, the Summerlands are calling And the birds are singing The sun shines all the time All around the blooming catnip
I may try a different set of words hear, somewhat "happier", but this is my first submission.

Not yet. I mean, it will be based on Irish folk songs, but I haven't figured out exactly the focus yet.

Orange Kitten's Mew
|
(Link) |
|
I finished mine! It's called "Orange Kitten's Mew" and is written from the viewpoint of my daughter who found an abandoned kitten beneath our neighbor's deck in 2001. The kitten stayed with us and grew into Tiger, a beautiful, loving, and very vocal orange tabby cat, who just happens to be sleeping in a box right next to me as I type this. The original song is one of my favorites, "May Morning Dew." Hope you like it! BTW, writing this was so much fun. I've been in a writing slump lately and feel proud now that I've created something again! :-)
Orange Kitten's Mew
One sunny June morning as I played in the grass, I heard loud meowing beneath my neighbor’s house. When I peered into darkness, my heart pounced anew. I found the friend I'd wished for in the orange kitten's mew.
I set him in a basket and showed him to mom, his wee head under his tail and small body so calm. I said if I can keep him, there's nothing I won't do, for my soul was enchanted by the orange kitten's mew.
Dad said we could only keep him 'till he found a new home. Then the months scurried by; soon the kitten was full grown. Each evening he and dad cuddled in the living room. Dad had fallen under the spell of the orange kitten's mew.
Almost five years later, Tiger still brings us much joy, crying for belly rubs and batting ‘round his toy. The family is blessed to know a cat so loving and true. Our lives were changed forever by the orange kitten’s mew.

Lyrics!
|
(Link) |
|
I love your CD! Inspired by said CD, my cat and I stumbled into these lyrics. I'ts from "All for Me Grog"
All for Me Milk
Well, it's all for me milk, me jolly, jolly milk All for me milk and me catnip! For I spend all me days alseep or in a haze And at night I'm goin out for to wander
Where is me string? Me noggin, noggin string? All gone for milk and me catnip! For it's tangled in a heap and the end I cannot keep And the middle's looking out for better weather.
Well, it's all....
Where is me couch? Me noggin, noggin couch? All gone for milk and me catnip! For it's holey and it's stained And there's termites in the frame The the cusions' looking out for better weather!
Well, it's all.....
Where are me boots? me noggin, noggin boots? All gone for milk and me catnip! For the heals they are worn out and the toes are knocked about And the soles are looking out for better weather!
Well, it's all.....
You can see where it goes from there. In case you didn't catch it, the boots were left in there as a puss-in-boots reference. Phleo (pronounced flay-oh) seemed to like that part. :)

re-writes for new Cat CD
|
(Link) |
|
Here's one for your sequel, Marc. It's probably not very good but I thought I'd give it a go. "Health to the Company" has always been my favorite Celtic drinking song for I tend to enjoy Scottish music much more then Irish. Feel free to change it around if you want. (Or to leave it off the final cut entirely). Hope you're well, Edward from Vermont
"Meow for Our Feline Crew" (A re-write of the Scottish song “Health to the Company) E. A. Burke 1/6/2005
Kind feline companions, come chase yarn with me We’ll frolic and ramble till a quarter past three. We’ll keep old Farmer Malcolm up and old Mrs. Finbar too, For we are Scottish barnyard cats, and mischief is what we do.
Chorus: So here’s a meow for the fencepost, where we howl and scream. We beg almost nightly for some fresh fish and cream. Here’s a meow for our feline crew, we annoy the neighbor’s dog, Till a boot is sharply thrown at us, and the risin’ of the fog.
Well my bed it lies in my human’s house – all warm as can be. I wish to go back there and my human for to see. For I’m sick of this rovin’, it’s threatened me nine lives I long for a soft down quilt on which to lie.
So here’s a meow the fencepost, where we howl and scream, We beg almost nightly for some fresh fish and cream. Here’s a meow for our feline crew, we annoy the neighbors dog, Till a boot is sharply thrown at us, and the risin’ of the fog.
Now when I am old and grey, and my whiskers turn snowy white. Me rovin’ days sall be over, and no longer will I fight, For me ears they are chipped and scratched and me tail is half gone. I will enjoy me own warm bed when the old wood stove is on.
Chorus

I'm glad (and very, very surprised) you like it, Marc. I know "Health to the Company" isn't Irish, but "Bonnie Ship the Diamond" wasn't either so I figured Scottish was ok.

the latest review
|
(Link) |

This is not really on topic, but I didn't want to sign on to another blog service to post this. In responce to he laterst review of "Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers": Has Mrs. Heggarty got her facts straight? The review was well written but some of the things she said sounded a bit deprived to me. For example: was that a real Irish proverb about the relationship between man and cat? And about the comment that no label would pick up a project with such a lucrative idea as Cat drinking songs...well maybe they wouldn't but It seems a bit presumptious to me. The great thing about "Irish Drinking Songs...." is that it is not commercial in anyway (despite it's popularity so far)...it's a folksy, homemade album sung by a guy who simply loves his music and his cats...and that's why I'm a fan. Keep up the good work, Marc, cause we need more people like you in the music business.

The Naughty Kitty Melody - "The Moreen"(The Minstrel Boy) -Written by Melissa E. Ramey on Jun. 25, 2006 (hpysb70th2mM)
The Naughty Kitty on the floor has gone; in the living room you will find it. the litterbox is in the bathroom found; not a scratch is made inside it.
No! Bad Cat!(<- Cat collaboration here, meows, chasing din) I cried aloud; in hot persuit I tailed him. Away, he scampered at my curses vowed; as I swore I would prevail him.
Thru the hallway, kitchen, bath and den; in each room was I eluded. Till finally in the living room I stood; while he found a place secluded.
And as I grumpily wiped my shoe; his green eyes seemed to tease me.. "next time, you're gonna change my litter's brand perchance you'll think to see me!"
Here's my entry, hope you like it. :)
Purrrs, ~Melissa~

I love it. That's awesome! :)
I put together one based on "Henry Martin." If you need an mp3 of the song, let me know. :-)
Kitty Martin
There were three cat brothers in merry Scotland; In merry Scotland there were three. And they did cast lots which of them should go, Should go, should go And turn mouser all on the salt sea.
The lot it fell first upon Kitty Martin, The fiercest of all of the three. That he should turn mouser all on the salt sea, Salt sea, salt sea For to maintain a fine vessel rat-free.
He had not been sailing but a long winter's night And part of a short winter's day, Before he espied a large fat grey rat, Fat grey rat, fat grey rat Come a-creeping down at him straight way.
"Meow! Meow!" Cried Kitty Martin; "What makes you slink so nigh?" "I'm a poor rodent bound for that sack of grain, Sack of grain, sack of grain. Will you please for to let me pass by?"
"Meow! Meow!" Cried Kitty Martin; "That thing it never could be! For I am turned mouser all on the salt sea, Salt sea, salt sea For to maintain a fine vessel rat-free.
"Come, lower your pink tail and write up your will, And bring yourself over to me; For I will chase you and your cousins all, Cousins all, cousins all, And your dear bodies I'll eat with my tea."
"Oh no! I won't lower my slender pink tail, Nor bring myself over to thee! And you shan't take from me my dear rodent life Rodent life, rodent life Nor force me to jump in the sea."
With tooth, claw, and squealing, hard at it they went, For fully two hours or three, Till Kitty Martin gave to him the death bite, The death bite, the death bite, And straight down the gullet went he.
Bad news, bad news to rat cousins came; Bad news to rats soon came 'round. "There's been a poor rodent and he's passed away, Passed away, passed away! And now the cat runs us to ground."

I don't know how familiar you are with the text of The Lord of the Rings, but there's a charming drinking song early in tFotR featuring, amongst other things, a barman who owns a hard-drinking cat that plays the fiddle for bar patrons. I'm not sure how much you can use in the name of parody without risking copyright infringement, and the Tolkien estate has a well-earned reputation for being a nuisance to work with, but it might be worth checking out anyway.
If you have any interest, and you don't have a copy of LoTR around, I'll happily transcribe the song for you.
