The Live Show That Should Never Be Heard!

Do you ever do something that you kinda wish you hadn't done? Worse. Have you ever had a recording of that thing you wish you hadn't done? Worse still. Have you ever shared that recording of that thing you wish you hadn't done? Personally, I somehow think that's the most foolish to do. I mean, why would anyone want to publicly humiliate themselves? Yet, for me... Okay, let me back track a moment and explain. Last month, the Brobdingnagian Bards led a vacation tour of Ireland. It was awesome. Great sites. Great people on the tour. Our coach driver, Liam, said it best, "You're a like most tour groups. You're fun!" Now me, I'm a podcaster and archivist. I like recording stuff shows I do and sharing them with others. It's what I do. But I also like to drink. And on occasion, I get kinda wild while drinking. So halfway through the tour while we were holed up in Lisdoonvarna, I and 20 friends went to a pub. I sang, drank, sang some more while everyone else sang, drank, and sang-a-long. It was great craic! Past couple days, I went back and listened to those recordings. Youch! Sure there was some FUN stuff early on in the evening while I was still sober. But that NC-17 version of "Scarborough Faire"...? I don't think that should be heard. Nor should my foul mouth throughout the end of that show. And the "I Need to Pee" song was just, well, bad. So it raises that interesting dilemna that I'm trying to figure out. Should I accidentally lose *ahem* delete, those files? Or hold on to them with the fear I'll be blackmailed in later years. Or should I go ahead and find the good material and just release that. I'm leaning more towards that. Why soil my mediocre name with material that was questionable at best... not to mention the performance of that last hour just, well, stunk. I know, I know. Those on the tour are like "I WANT IT!" And those who weren't and read this are saying, "GIVE IT TO ME!" But I just don't know... I mean, if someone else recorded it and wanted to listen to it at their leisure, that's one thing that doesn't really bother me. But when I have the power to protect my image, a sensible person would say, "Yes! Protect it!" But then when have I ever been sensible? Anyway, when I finally decide, I'll post those live shows here with my others.
Oh! And Andrew and I listened to the tracks for our live CD. We have some Great material! |
I used to have an online talk show, and because of the software I used, it recorded and kept everything I said/did.
One night, I had forgotten that I was recording at the time, and I cussed out one of my roommates.
About 50 people who were tuned in also got said earful.
I was not happy, but it taught me a very valuable lesson. Your actions may sometimes get a much wider audience.
(I though, do wonder what the X-rated Scarborough Faire sounds like. *tunes mandolin*)
And...
It's up to you, ultimately. Since my entire schtick is self-deprecating at best, I'd be fine with it. However, if you have strong reservations against letting others hear it, then stick with your gut.
Considering my own relative proximity to said recorder... how much are you angling for as a bribe to 'lose' those files from the last hour or so? ;-)
But then again, I must have been getting booze when you did the perverted version Scarborough Faire, and I missed that! Woe!
I'm the kind of person who loves to live in the moment. Before I went to Japan, I never even owned a camera, and now that I'm here, I haven't taken nearly the number of pictures that everyone says I should. This is mainly because I think that some things *should* be recorded for posterity, and then some things should just be allowed to live in their own moment.
Honestly, what you're describing sounds like one of those things. As interesting as it might be to hear the perverted version of Scarborough Faire, it's not my moment - i.e. I wasn't there in Ireland to be a part of the fun environment that created it - and, in fact, it sorta sounds like one of those "you had to be there" moments.
So, I'd say, release the good stuff, but hold back on the "questionably fun" stuff. A person's public image is made of a collection of moments and memories. It's up to you to decide which moments and memories you will choose to make up the image you want to project.

What sort of equipment do you use for recording your live gigs? Do you have your own independent equipment or do you tap into the venue's audio system?

Do you set it up independent of the venue's sound system (if there is one)?

usually. though it also records great acoustically too.
I would LOVE to hear the "I have to Pee" song.
it's cute when good singers do it badly once in awhile.. it adds character and lets us see that there is another side to the person.
My vote is to keep them. If anything, at least keep them for yourself. It sounds like you had a wonderful time in Ireland, and those recordings are like photographs, heck, they're better than photographs! Who knows when you’ll get back to Ireland again.
Keep’em.
My band and I have been recording and I have said some things I would not want my parents to hear. My boyfriend who is the guitarist wants to release it some day and I clearly said "NO!", so I completely understand you. If it were me, I would keep them for myself, but as for releasing them... well, clearly thats up to you.
Back when SCAT did our live show we recorded all of them as they were broadcst. Then, when we went back over the shows we picked up the worst stuff we ever did and put them on a reel. We then did a "Worst of SCAT" show live, and let the group comment on the sketches as they played. It was a very popular show.
I suppose the question here is do you want people to see you for yourself, or do you want to set this sort of moral standard for yourself that you will then /always/ have to meet?
You're not someone like Mr. Rogers, who was always seen as a pillar of moral and decent behavior. That's not to say you're a bad person because you don't act like Mr. Rogers all the time. It means you are your own self and you're not required to live up to that standard.
I would say that if the sound quality is bad, then don't release. If the sound quality is good, release it, maybe seize the fact that this is a not-safe-for-work/family sort of deal and run with that notion.
On the other hand, if you find it personally embarrassing (versus 'OMG, it could wreck my career and I won't get any more young groupies!'), then don't release.
S'up to you, dude.
Speaking as one of the people (and kinda speaking for two others) who is on that recorder doing very embarassing things as well, I say it is up to you what you want to do with it publicly. No one knows us or our voices on there, so it's not really going to haunt us. (Unicorn jibes notwithstanding ;-) ) It's up to you what to release and what to "lose."
But, also speaking as one (and two) of the above...we would want a full copy for our personal recollections. :-)

As I was reading this, when I got to the line about Scarborough Faire I almost spewed beer on my keyboard. It's making me wonder what you did to it!
I agree with what was mostly said above. Keep them for yourself.
